JBW was retained to provide design engineering and process analysis services for a client’s dryer system upgrade. This project included the analysis of a complex air-material separation system with high heat and humidity that is integrated with environmental controls. The dryers take wet wood flake material at 50% moisture and dry it to 5%. The water removed from the flakes is absorbed in the hot air, which is then separated from the dry flakes in a cyclone system. The hot, moist air goes on to be further separated into three more stages for environmental compliance. JBW analyzed the system and ultimately suggested removing two
fans from the system to achieve the pressures desired in certain locations.
The analysis required multiple days of on-site monitoring and testing the airstreams for pressure, moisture, and temperature. Additionally, our team provided BIM coordination for the newly upgraded dryers, construction drawings, design and engineering of support systems, spark detection and extinguishment, and a heat reclaim system.
Structural design was provided for the new dryer foundations and platforms associated with the project. Finally, JBW provided on-site construction administration for the entirety of the two-week shutdown, working closely with contractors to complete the project.
