JBW Consulting Engineers was asked to design two Ammonia Suppression systems for a power generation client. Although the client had no history of spills or leaks, their proximity to a major interstate prompted them to take precautions before an event were to occur.

JBW designed a suppression system per NFPA that tied into the 10” facility fire suppression loop underground, with a large actuated valve. Each suppression system has a flow rate of 360 GPM with spray nozzles specified with proper flow patterns to deluge the tanks and their structure during a leak event. The system is initiated by ammonia sensors strategically located. JBW provided flow analysis and spray coverage calculations and diagrams, structural engineering for pipe supports with large water hammer reactions, and controls engineering for the project. Our deliverables included installation drawings for the system and a calculation package indicating how the system was designed.
