Sure Clamp R&D Prototype

JBW was engaged to help support one of our industrial clients, who was experiencing issues during part of their operational processes. It was reported that their clamp trucks were prone to roll drop while picking up various sized paper rolls, due to bad clamps. The client wanted to address the issue and find a solution that would better support the clamp trucks in moving larger paper rolls and picking up rolls more accurately to reduce the risk of the roll drop. As part of the strategy, it was agreed to follow a R&D approach, with a “fail-fast” strategy, that would allow JBW to quickly pivot design efforts before committing to a solution that has not yet demonstrated feasibility. By following this strategy, we believed that it was well suited to the R&D nature of the project and in the client’s best interest.

This first phase of the project would allow JBW to design a prototype control system and test on a clamp truck at the facility site. If the approach was unfeasible, we would be able to discuss the next steps with the client and coordinate a redirection from there. If successful, future phases would involve designing a more robust solution that could be installed on a single clamp truck for a trial operation run. Then after finding success on a single clamp truck, JBW would help the client in scaling that solution to their clamp truck fleet.
