JBW was engaged to provide preliminary civil engineering services related to modifications at an existing substation and the development of a proposed substation site. The first phase of work focused on performing cut-and-fill analyses and preliminary grading to evaluate widening the existing entrance approach and extending the fence line to the west. The team also reviewed the existing culvert and site grading to assess future drainage patterns. In addition, JBW provided slope information along the east side of the approach to help the client determine whether a retaining wall would be necessary. Preliminary grading for the proposed substation site was also developed during this phase using existing topographic survey data.
Following completion of the initial analysis, JBW was retained to perform a second phase of work that included civil and foundation engineering for both the substation expansion and a new greenfield substation project. This phase resulted in a final civil IFC engineering package for the substation expansion, along with civil and structural IFC design packages for the greenfield substation foundations. The work included a site visit, as well as review of existing survey data and the geotechnical report.
Foundation design for the greenfield substation included multiple foundations supporting 69 kV and 25 kV structures, along with foundations for the control building, transformer, voltage regulator, capacitor bank, static mast, and light poles. Civil design deliverables for both the existing and greenfield substations included plan sheets for existing conditions, site layout, grading, drainage and erosion control, turning movements, and plan and profile drawings.
