JBW was retained by a local environmental products manufacturer to evaluate their dryer system and provide a report on the findings. The client was experiencing issues with plugging in the dryer duct and not being able to dry the woodchips during colder months. JBW traveled to the facility and collected airflow and temperature readings on the system. We then compared the results against the design criteria for the system and found that the fan was not only the wrong type, but that it was also undersized, it was also noted that the main burner for the system was undersized for the winter months. Both findings were contributing to the issues noted above. JBW then performed a thermodynamic calculation to understand how much heat would be required to melt and evaporate the frozen wood chips during the winter months. JBW recommended that the speed of the fan be increased and a pre-heater system be added. The fan would increase the airflow in the duct and would help with product drop. The pre-heater system would establish a consistent heating baseline during the colder months so that the main burner could adapt to the process needs. JBW coordinated the procurement of the fan parts and the pre-heater system with the client to ensure the proper equipment was ordered. During the next winter, JBW checked back in with the plant manager and was told that the system was meeting their expectations even on the coldest days.
