JBW was retained to provide steel structure foundation design and engineering support for a new 115 kV substation and approximately 10 miles of associated transmission line. JBW’s primary scope focused on foundation design for the substation structures, which required reinforced concrete foundations to support the electrical equipment and structural steel.

Because foundation reaction data was not available for several of the structures, JBW developed structural models of the steel structures, transformer, control house, and voltage regulators to determine the required loading conditions. This analysis included modeling the dead-end structure to evaluate foundation reaction forces and verify that the structural steel members were adequate. Additional modeling was performed for up to eight structures to establish the loading conditions required for foundation design.

The foundation scope included the modeling and analysis of up to eight foundations. This work included five unique pier foundations, which were assigned to structures based on the calculated structural reactions and the capacity of each foundation type. The design also included three unique mat or stem-wall foundations to support the transformer (including oil containment), control house, and voltage regulators.
