JBW was subcontracted to provide a power system analysis update for a manufacturing plant in northern Minnesota. The manufacturing plant needed to update their power system analysis study per IEEE 1584-2018 standards. The intent of the project was to update the short circuit study, coordination study, and arc flash evaluation with the facility changes since the previous report in 2018. JBW’s services included coordinating with the utility company to obtain updated source impedance, as well as coordinating with the field crews to gather information. Site visits were necessary to field verify protection relay settings and update single lines with the new equipment and changes since 2018 in SKM, for the 13.8kV switches down to 480V MCCs. Updated SKM models were provided that conformed with IEEE 1584-2018. Additionally, an updated short circuit study, coordination study and arc flash evaluation were all performed using SKM.
JBW performed a review of the short circuit study to identify potential over duty devices. A review of the breakers and relay settings were conducted to optimize for coordination and minimize arc flash levels at the equipment. A final deliverable included the power study results and recommendations report for the client. Furthermore, JBW coordinated with the field crews to install arc flash labeling and followed up with a site visit for arc flash labeling verification.
