JBW was contracted to assist with two power system analysis updates for a large freight railway company. One of the analyses was for a major port facility in Ohio, on the southern shore of Lake Erie. The second was for an iron ore loading and rail operations hub located in northern Minnesota. Both facilities intended to update their arc flash studies in order to be compliant with NFPA 70E recommendations, as required every 5 years. JBW anticipated that both the updated analyses encompassed little to no additions of equipment compared to the previous studies, as there were no noted facility modifications or updates since the previous reports. While there were no significant anticipated site changes, a review of each site for minor adjustments was included and would be reported in JBW’s power system analysis for each project.
JBW coordinated with each utility company to obtain updated source impedance as well as with field crews to gather information. A site visit for each facility was also included to field-verify protection relay settings and single-line details. Using SKM, JBW was able to update and provide single-line drawings and build a new SKM electrical model for each project. The analyses encompassed all electrical equipment within the scope of the project, ranging from 13.8kV switches down to 480V MCCs. JBW’s final deliverables provided the client with the power study results and recommendations report for each facility and new or replacement arc flash labeling and installation for the equipment.
