JBW Consulting Engineers provided the foundation and precast wall analysis services at a food processing facility in Minong, WI. Based on on-site visits, laser scans, and a geotechnical investigation, JBW delivered multiple technical memorandums.
JBW was contacted due to concerns about the facility’s concrete structure, foundations, and general integrity. During a preliminary site visit, various indicators of potential structural issues were discovered. Water was observed streaming in through roof/wall connections — wall panels appeared to be pulling away from the roofing, and floor panels appeared to be settling and cracking. Following the site visit, JBW concluded that more information was required to analyze the potential structural issues accurately.
JBW completed an initial desktop review of historical plans, specifications, and geotechnical information to identify potential areas of concern. JBW then performed laser scans of the facility’s exterior walls and combined that information with existing soil and structure data to develop a tech memo outlining the structural deficiencies, their severity, and a recommended course of action. Multiple precast wall panels were found to be tilting outside of industry-standard tolerance up to 171%.
After the initial investigation and areas of high concern were identified, JBW partnered with a geotechnical engineering firm to perform subsurface investigations around the building. Multiple areas were identified containing substandard soils and unfavorable drainage conditions. JBW provided recommendations for remediation, focusing on improving drainage away from the existing foundations.
